About Ocean Waves Quilt Guild

monkey wrench or snail's trail block

The logo of the Ocean Waves Quilt Guild is a blue and white monkey wrench or snail's trail block.

It was chosen by the charter members because it resembled a rolling wave.

Ocean Waves Quilt Guild first met in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and now meets in Lewes, Delaware - both coastal communities

Ocean Waves Quilt Guild began as a conversation among three members of a guild that met in the evening - which was at a distance from their homes. It was a long drive and difficult to always attend with family responsibilities. They felt there was interest in a daytime quilt guild.

On April 7, 1997, Ocean Waves Quilt Guild came to be. A group of 18 friends, looking to have fun and expand their quilting knowledge and skills - closer to home and meeting, mornings.

It has grown to a membership of 186 quilters (as of Feb., 2013) - continuing to make friends, have fun and expand their quilting knowledge. Five of the 18 founding members are still active in the guild today.

It began in the community center meeting room of the first president's development.

It outgrew four locations as more space was needed for parking and the increasing membership, with more time allotted for programs and classes than sites could provide.

In the first year, the theme was "Back to Basics" with meetings devoted to sharing the knowledge of members on such quilting topics as; building a better ironing board, using a rotary cutter, color, paper piecing or workshops on: making logo name tags, holiday ornaments, and blocks of the month.

Now the guild offers monthly programs with professional quilters, teaching follow up classes along with member led pre-meeting demonstrations, an annual challenge, multiple ongoing community service projects, bus trips, numerous bees and other special quilting activities.

Ocean Waves began as, is now and strives to always be a community of quilters drawn together by their passion for the craft, known to; welcome all in warm fellowship, to always be willing to share their talents, knowledge and resources to further the art of quilting, committed to community service and having fun along the way.

Created by Nancy Reeves, a charter member, the Ocean Waves banner was a product of a guild challenge, held in 2000. She won first place in the challenge and donated the banner to the guild

The challenge was to use the patterned fabric to make something beautiful.

Nancy used the Ocean Waves logo block, alternating with squares within squares. She assigned the following meaning to each color-

Turquoise - When we are young, everything looks bright, healthy and happy - even as waves beat around us.

Green - As we get older we experience more responsibilities, more stress, more sadness. Our children become teenagers. Some of us experience divorce. The death of our parents sobers us.

Dark Blue - We are older, wiser, slower. some of us are ill or saddened by the death of our partner. You notice though that the dark blue is clam, deep, serene - reverent and devout.

Print (Challenge Fabric)
- Through it all the waves are constant and crashing - touching us - changing us - but not beating us down.

Yellow
- Around our lives, joys, sorrow, is the bright, helpful, uplifting circle of friends. They make sure we are not down too long. they cheer us and pray for us and visit us. They include us in the love of the Ocean Waves Quilt Guild.
Tassel - We have all graduated from something, even the school of hard knocks.
